ALL ABOUT DIGITAL CAMERAS

Digital images and pixels

Digital Photographs may look continuous just like a normal Photographs. But unlike a normal image, a digital image is composed of millions of tiny squares called ‘Pixels’ the quality of a digital image is thereby measured in pixels. The higher the volume of Mega pixels, the higher becomes the quality of the digital image

              Pixel Count

Pixel count of digital cameras in use at present varies between 1 Million pixels (Mega Pixel) to around 14 Million (14 Mega Pixel / 14 MP)

A 3MP digital camera is more than enough for the use of armatures. It gives excellent 4” x 6” prints and good 5” x  7“ prints.

However, to make larger prints, it is advisable to use a d MP or   MP camera.

Optical Zoom & Digital Zoom
Optical Zoom Camera
Digital Zoom Camera

Nowadays, most of the digital cameras consist of both the optical zoom and the digital zoom.

Optical zoom is very important for a digital camera, because optical zoom will give the chance to short a high quality picture than digital zooming.

Optical zoom means, the focal length of the camera can be changed buy moving the camera lense physically, just as zooming a lense on a film camera.

In a digital zooming camera, the lense can not be moved physically. It simply crops the image and then enlarge the cropped portion.

Where the picture quality is considered, optical zooming cameras are better than digital zooming cameras,

For an amateurs use, a 4x optical zoom camera is adequate. But for professional photography, it would worth to go for a more powerful camera (eg 10 x optical zoom)

Sensitivity and white balance

When choosing a film for a film camera , it is important to consider its ISO rating (eg ISO 100, ISO 200, ISO 400) similarly, when buying a digital camera it is wise to consider its sensitivity settings. Because, the sensitivity setting in a digital camera is introduced as a similar technology as ISO rating for film cameras.

Also, the ability of white balance should be considered as a very important feature, when buying a digital camera. The white balance technology in a digital camera, adjusts the camera setting according to the source of light used for shooting pictures. (eg Sunlight, Fluorescent light, Filament Light). Therefore, it gives a better quality picture.

Memory

In digital cameras, “Memory Cards” are used to sore the shooted pictures and video clips,

A main future of memory card is the reusability. When the stored pictures are deleted, the memory card can be used again to restore new pictures.

The Number of photos which can be stored and the video time period depends on the capacity of the memory card. (eg. 16 MB, 32 MB. 128 MB, 256 MB, 512 MB etc..)

If you need to video from your camera, the capacity of the memory card should be at least 256 MB.

When the capacity of the memory card becomes higher, so does its price. Therefore it is wise to select a memory card which is just sufficient for your needs.

Digital cameras consists of several types of memory cards:

1.                  Compact Flash (CF)
2.                  Multi Media
3.                  Secure Digital (SD)
4.                  Memory Stick
5.                  Smart Media

Among the mentioned several types, memory sticks are conventional for digital cameras of “SONY” brand.

When buying a digital camera and we hope that this knowledge will help you to select a better quality camera to suit your needs.
